Jayapura is the capital of Papua province, Indonesia, on the island of New Guinea. From 1910 to 1962 it was known as Hollandia and was the capital of a province of the same name in the northeast of West New Guinea. It became Kotabaru from October 1, 1962, till May 1, 1963; Sukarnopura till the end of 1968; and Abepura till March 1969 before acquiring its present name.
Sited on Teluk Yos Sudarso (Humboldt Bay) the area was host to a large naval base during World War II. Occupied by the Japanese in World War II, it was liberated by U.S. forces in April 1944, and served as General Douglas MacArthur's headquarters.
The area has megalithic stone monuments.
Population (2002) approximately 200,000.
