Janet Napolitano (born 29 November 1957) is the current governor of Arizona, elected in 2002. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Some experts and pundits initially considered Napolitano to be a possible running mate for presidential candidate John Kerry in the 2004 U.S. presidential election.

In 1998, she was elected Attorney General of Arizona, after having served as United States Attorney for the District of Arizona, a position to which she was appointed in 1993 by Bill Clinton. During her term as Arizona's attorney general, Napolitano was diagnosed with breast cancer, and underwent a mastectomy. She won the gubernatorial election of 2002 with 47% of the vote, succeeding Jane Dee HullJane Dee Hull (born August 8, 1935) was the first elected female governor of the U. state of Arizona.
