Jaan Einasto (born 23 February 1929) is an eminent Estonian astrophysicist and one of the discoverers of Dark Matter and of the cellular structure of the Universe.

Born in Tartu, he attended the University of Tartu, where he received the Ph.D. equivalent in 1955 and a senior research doctorate in 1972. From 1952, he has worked as a scientist at the Tartu Observatory ( 1977- 1998 Head of the Department of CosmologyCosmology is the study of the large-scale structure and history of the universe. In particular, it deals with subjects regarding its origin and evolution. It is studied by Astronomy, Philosophy, and Religion. See also cosmogony. Subjects in cosmology incl; in 1992-1995 , he was Professor of Cosmology at the University of Tartu. For a long time, he was Head of the Division of AstronomyAstronomy which etymologically means " law of the stars," (from Greek: + nomos) is a science involving the observation and explanation of events occurring outside Earth and its atmosphere. It studies the origins, evolution, physical and chemical propertie and PhysicsPhysics (from the Greek, physikos , "natural", and physis , "Nature") is the science of Nature in the broadest sense. Physicists study the behavior and properties of matter in a wide variety of contexts, ranging from the sub-microscopic particles from whi of the Estonian Academy of Sciences in TallinnThe city of Tallinn (also known by its German name Reval is the capital city and main seaport of Estonia. It is located on Estonia's north coast to the Baltic Sea, 80 kilometres south of Helsinki. Name "Tallinn" Other historical names are Koluvan, Lindani. Einasto is a member of the Academia Europaea , the European Astronomical Society and the Royal Astronomical SocietyThe Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) began as the Astronomical Society of London in 1820 to support astronomical research (mainly carried on at the time by 'gentleman astronomers' rather than professionals). It became the Royal Astronomical Society in 183; he has received three Estonian National Science Awards.

Einasto has attracted the attention of the international scientific community as well as of the general public with his work on the structural formation and evolutionThis article is about biological evolution. For other possible meanings, see Evolution (disambiguation). Evolution generally refers to any process of change over time. However, in the context of the life sciences, evolution is a change in the genetic make of the Universe, especially as one of the discoverers of Dark Matter and as the discoverer of the cellular structure of the Universe.
