Izard County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 13,249. The county seat is Melbourne.

Izard County was formed on 27 October 1825 and is named for War of 1812 General and Arkansas Territorial Governor George Izard.

1 Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,513 km˛ (584 mi˛). 1,504 km˛ (581 mi˛) of it is land and 9 km˛ (3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.57% water.

2 Demographics

As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 13,249 people, 5,440 households, and 3,769 families residing in the county. The racial makeup of the county is 96.41% White, 1.44% Black or African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 1.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,440 households out of which 25.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.70% are married couples living together, 7.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.70% are non-families. 27.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.78.

In the county the population is spread out with 20.90% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 25.00% from 25 to 44, 25.80% from 45 to 64, and 21.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 102.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $25,670, and the median income for a family is $32,313. Males have a median income of $22,389 versus $18,450 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,397. 17.20% of the population and 13.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.40% of those under the age of 18 and 13.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
