The Italian Social Republic (Repubblica Sociale Italiana in Italian) also known as the Republic of Salò, was a fascist puppet state in German-occupied northern Italy, formed after Mussolini was rescued by Otto Skorzeny, with Mussolini as leader.

It was founded on September 23, 1943 after the capitulation of Italy and lasted until 1945. Its capital was located at Salò, a small village on Lake Garda. Soon after its establishment it was forced to cede Trieste, Istria and South Tyrol to Germany, with the understanding that VeniceVenice ( Italian Venezia German Venedig , the city of canals, is the capital of the region of Veneto, population 271,073 (2001). The city stretches across numerous small islands in a marshy lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater l would be taken at some point.
