The Israeli West Bank Wall (called "barrier" and "security fence" by Israel) is a physical separation wall consisting of a network of walls, electrified fences and deep trenches, which is being constructed by Israel around Palestinian population areas. Israel had initially announced that the wall would approximately follow the 1949 armistice line (also known as the " Green Line"), but several officials have later stated that it was not intended to and never will follow the "Green Line". In many areas the route diverges from this line, particularly in areas with a high concentration of Jews: Jerusalem, Ariel, Beitar Illit, Efrat, Gush Etzion, and Maale Adumim. These divergences may be as much as 20 kilometers. In some of these areas, the final route is under consideration [1].

Because it intrudes deeply into the territory of the future Palestinian state and causes extreme hardship to most Palestinians, this wall is opposed by most of the world community, and it was ruled illegal by the the International Court of JusticeThe International Court of Justice (known colloquially as the World Court is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. Established in 1945, its main functions are to settle disputes submitted to it by states and to give advisory opinions on lega and the U.N. General Assembly. Israeli courts have also ruled that the wall route must be changed to minimize the hardship to Palkestinian piopulation.

The name of the barrier is also a political issue. Israel uses terms "separation fence" and " securitySecurity is being free from danger. In absolute sense this is hardly possible, it is a relative matter. The term can be used with reference to crime, accidents of all kinds, etc. Note that Security should not be confused with Safety. In some languages (e. fence", but most of the world, including the International Court of JusticeThe International Court of Justice (known colloquially as the World Court is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. General Assembly call it a " wall"; some use the term "Apartheid wall" to draw parallel with bantustanBantustan refers to any of the territories designated as tribal " homelands" for black South Africans during the Apartheid era. The term "bantustan" was first used in the late 1940s and was coined from Bantu (meaning "people" in the Bantu languages) and ss in South Africa during its ApartheidApartheid ap-ar-taed is an Afrikaans word meaning "separation" or literally "aparthood" (or "apartness"). Israel has built a similar barrier around the Gaza Strip (see Israeli Gaza Strip barrier).
