They were formed to represent the special and specific needs of the island at local, United Kingdom and international levels. Their main policy was to secure what they descirbed as a "fixed link" between Wight and the UK mainland. They also advocated road improvement and the building of a metro rail system for the island, as well as investigating the possibility of a direct ferry link to the European mainland.
They also advocated various other measures to improve the island's infastructure, economy and tourist industry.
They polled poorly at the 2001 general election, receiving only 1.8% of the votes cast in Wight.
They are not directly related to the previous Vectis National Party which operated on the island in the 1970s.
