Home > Ironbound

The Ironbound is a large, but close-knit, Brazilian-Portuguese neighborhood in Newark, New Jersey. The neighborhood covers four square miles, and is surrounded by rails on its three sides, hence the name "iron bound." In past times, the area was called "Dutch Neck" or "Down Neck," today it is often referred to as the East Ward. Whatever the name, the neighborhood is one of Newark's most vibrant.

The Ironbound is a mix of different home styles, from regular apartments, to single-family houses on small lots, to two family homes. The neighborhood's commercial heart is Ferry Street.

Portuguese immigrants began arriving in the 1920s, joining the Poles, Italians, and Irish who were already there. The large influx of Portuguese occurred in the 1960s, and has continued to this day, with gradually more Brazilians settling in. Even today, there are over twenty Portuguese social clubs. Ballantine's Brewery was located in the neighborhood, but closed in the 1970s.
