Home > Iron Range

The Iron Range is the name given to much of northeastern Minnesota in the United States. In the region, there are actually multiple distinct bands of iron ore, of which the Mesabi Range is by far the largest, making "Iron Range" and "Mesabi Range" mean the same thing to many Minnesotans. Other ranges include the Vermilion Range , the Cuyuna Range , and the Gunflint Range . The Iron Range is largely the same area as the so-called Arrowhead region of Minnesota.

The Mesabi Range is largely within the counties of Itasca and St. Louis, and the Vermilion range is northeast of that in St. Louis and Lake counties. The Cuyuna Range is to the southwest of the Mesabi Range, largely within Crow Wing County. The Gunflint Range is in the extreme northern portion of Cook County and extends into Canada.

The Iron Range Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Board (IRRRB), sometimes known simply as Iron Range Resources,[1] is an economic development agency funded partly by taxes levied by the state on taconite-producing companies and charged with creating jobs. Detractors consider it an example of pork barrel politics.
