Home > Iron (II) sulfate

Iron (II) sulfate ( Fe S O4) is an example of an ionic compound. It is found in various states of hydration (FeSO4· H2O, FeSO4·4H2O, FeSO4·5H2O, FeSO4·7H2O); the heptahydrate is also called green vitriol, copperas, or melanterite (a mineral that commonly occurs with pyrite). Iron (II) sulfate has a blue-green color, monoclinic crystal structure, and is water-soluble. Its melting point is 64°C, and at 90°C it loses water of hydration to form the monohydrate, a white powder known as the mineral szomolnokite when it occurs naturally. Iron sulfate pentahydrate forms the mineral siderotil.

Iron (II) sulfate is prepared commercially by oxidation of pyrite or by treating iron with sulfuric acid. It is used in the manufacture of inks, in wool dyeA dye can generally be described as a coloured substance that has an affinity to the substrate to which it is being applied. The dye is usually used as an aqueous solution and may require a mordant to improve the fastness of the dye on the fibre. In contring as a mordantA mordant is a substance used to set dyes. A mordant is either inherently collodial or produces colloids and can be either acidic or basic. Mordants include tannic acid, alum, chrome alum, and certain salts of aluminum, chromium, copper, iron, potassium,, and in water purificationWater purification or drinking water treatment is the process of removing contaminants from surface water or groundwater to make it safe and palatable for human consumption. A wide variety of technologies may be used, depending on the raw water source, co as a substitute for aluminium sulfate . It can also be used to treat iron deficiencyIron deficiency is the most common known form of nutritional deficiency. In the human body, iron is present in all cells and has several vital functions as a carrier of oxygen to the tissues from the lungs in the form of hemoglobin, as a facilitator of ox.
