2 Overview

Charles Haughey, Garret FitzGerald and Michael O Leary contest their first general election as leaders of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Labour Party respectively. A Fine Gael- Labour Party coalition government comes to power. Garret FitzGerald becomes the seventh Taoiseach.

Notable retirees: Former Taoisigh, Jack Lynch and Liam Cosgrave.

Newly elected deputies: Séamus Brennan, Mary Harney.
