The Town of Ira is in the northern part of the county. The town was founded in 1821 from part of the Town of Cato.
The north town line and part of the east town line are the border of Oswego County, New York and the remainder of the east town line is the border of Onondaga County, New York.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 90.5 km² (34.9 mi²). 90.2 km² (34.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.26% water.
As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 2,426 people, 822 households, and 669 families residing in the town. The population density is 26.9/km² (69.6/mi²). There are 867 housing units at an average density of 9.6/km² (24.9/mi²).
