right Polish IS-2. Note the turret is looking backwards

The Iosef Stalin tank, named after Joseph Stalin, was a heavy tank developed by the Soviet Union during World War II. It is sometimes written Iosif Stalin after the way the name is written in Russian (Иосиф Сталин).

Production started in 1943 and was later increased due to the performance of the German Panther and Tiger tanks at Kursk.

The IS-1 was the first production version and was equipped with a 85 mm gun.

Second model was the IS-2 with a new powerful 122 mm gun.

In late 1944 the design was upgraded to the IS-3 which had improved armor and a semicircular cast turret. The IS-3 did not take part in World War II.

The IS-3 remained in the Red Army until the late 1960s and even later in the armies of China and North Korea.
