An ion selective electrode (ISE) is an electrode designed to respond to only one type of ion. They are used to quickly determine concentrations of ions in liquids, and have uses in pH meters, blood tests as well as in industry. Different levels of the ion result in a different voltage on the electrode.
To measure with ISE, two electrodes are used. One is a reference electrode, in contact with the liquid to be measured. The other, selective electrode, is separated from the test liquid by a special membrane that only allows one ion to get through.
