In the fictional world of Star Wars, ion cannons are used to disable enemy electronics, particularly enemy craft. An ion cannon on Hoth defended the rebel base there against Imperial Star Destroyers by temporarily disabling those vessels long enough for evacuation craft to escape the blockade. Ssi-ruuk ion cannons were used to disable New Republic craft in the novel The Truce at Bakura.
In the television series Stargate SG-1, ion cannons were used as surface to space weapons to protect the Tollan from Goa'uld attack. In this case, the intent was not merely to disable craft: one ion cannon could easily destroy a mother ship with one shot.
In the computer game series Command and Conquer, the GDI used an ion cannon located on an orbital platform to destroy hardened Nod targets.
In the computer game series Homeworld, ion cannons are used as anti-capital ship weapons, due to their combination of immense power and narrow field of fire.
