Home > Inuvialuktun

Inuvialuktun is an indigenous language of Canada, spoken by a portion of the Inuit. It is part of the Inuit branch of the Eskimo group of the Eskimo-Aleut language family, and is closely related to Inuktitut. In fact they are so close that many consider Inuvialuktun to be a dialect of Inuktitut.

Inuvialuktun is mainly spoken by the Inuit of the Mackenzie River delta in the Northwest Territories. The government of the Northwest Territories recognizes Inuvialuktun as a distinct dialect of Inuktitut proper. Inuktitut is an official language of the Northwest Territories, and Inuvialuktun is thereby an official dialect.
