The state of Louisiana has plans to extend Interstate 49 to the south and east, from Lafayette, Louisiana to New Orleans, Louisiana roughly following the path of the current U.S. Highway 90.

To the north, Interstate 49 is proposed to extend through the Texarkanas, Fort Smith, Arkansas, and on to Kansas City, Missouri. This routing is proposed to include the proposed I-130 in Texas, I-540Interstate 540 is either of two interstate highway spurs of Interstate 40 in the United States. Arkansas In Arkansas, I-540 is a spur to Fort Smith, Arkansas and Bentonville, Arkansas; proposed to become part of an expanded Interstate 49. North Carolina I in Arkansas, and will parallel U.S. Highway 71 for the entire route.
