1 Introduction
Indian musical instruments can be broadly classified into three categories, namely classical, western and folk. See Carnatic music and Hindustani music.

- The ViolinThe violin is a stringed musical instrument that has four strings tuned a fifth apart. It is the smallest and highest-tuned member of the violin family of string instruments, which also includes the viola, cello and double bass. The lowest string (and hen is a popular western instrument used widely in Indian classical musicThe origins of Indian classical music can be found from the oldest of scriptures, part of the Hindu tradition, the Vedas. Samaveda, one of the four vedas describes music at length. The two main streams of Indian classical music are Hindustani music, from, specifically Carnatic music.

There are two main types of harmonium: a foot-pumped version that resembles a smal is originally a western instrument, but is now more popular in India than in other countries.
There are numerous native musical instruments used in folk music.
