Shams ud din Iltutmish, or Altamash, was the third Sultan of Delhi, and the only other significant ruler, besides the founder Qutb ud din Aibak , of the Slave Dynasty.

After the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate, Multan became its western frontier. In the beginning it was governed by Nasir-ud-Din Qabacha, then captured by jaial-al-Din Manakabarni and finally annexed by Shams-ud-Din Altamash. Altamash was the first king to appoint a woman as his official successor.

He completed the famous Qutub Minar in Delhi, started by the founder of the dynasty, Qutb ud din Aibak .
