Home > Iberian horse

The Iberian horse is native to the Iberian peninsula. One of the oldest of horse breeds, (its ancestors dating back to 25000 BC ) its domestication dates back as far as 3000 BC when Greek invaders feared the Iberian cavalry. Today, two breeds have derived from a common ancestor.

The first, the Lusitano, from Portugal, is the Royal breed in Portugal, and Alter Real is the royal stud. This breed is typically 15-16 hands (150-160 cm) at the withers. It is almost invariably bay in colour. In conformation, it resembles the Andalusian.
