Hulusi Behçet , born on February 20, 1889 in Istanbul, was a Turkish dermatologist and scientist. He described a disease of inflamed blood vessels in 1937, which is named after him as the Behçet's disease.

1 Early life

He had a difficult childhood, because he lost his mother very early and was raised by his grandmother. This gloomy state of mind had a detrimental influence on his whole life, leading him to become very introverted. He got his primary education in Damascus, (that times within the Ottoman Empire), due to his father's business affairs there. During the time of his position as professor at the university, he worked privately in a practice as well.

In 1923, he married Refika Davaz, the daughter of a well-known diplomat. They had a daughter from this marriage.
