Jackman was born in Sydney, Australia, the youngest of five children of English-born parents. His mother left the family and went back to England when he was eight years old, and he stayed behind lived with his father, who was an accountant. Jackman majored in journalism and graduated from the University of Technology in Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. He also graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 1994.
