Hr.Ms. Karel Doorman (F 827) is the first ship in the Karel Doorman, or M-fregat class of multi-purpose frigates. It is the third ship in the Royal Netherlands Navy to be named after admiral Karel Doorman, who was killed during the battle of the Java Sea.
Hr. Ms. Karel Doorman was laid down in 1985, launched in 1988 and came into service in 1991. It has taken part in anti-drug operations in the Caribbean together with the U.S. Navy, was part of the UN operations in the Adriatic Sea during the conflicts in the former republic of Yugoslavia, as well as various NATO excercises.
The Hr. Ms. Karel Doorman is a multi-purpose frigate and can be used in the anti-submarine, anti-air or surface combat roles. Its armament reflects that.
The primary armament consists of two quad launchers for the AGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missile, which has a range of 120 kilometres. Backing this up is a 76 mm Oto Melara gun, which has both anti-ship and anti-air capabilities.
Primairy air defence is provided by the sea sparrow vertical launch system. 16 Sea Sparrows are carried, which uses semi-active radar to find its target and has a range of 14 kilometres.
The Goalkeeper system provides closeup air defence. It fires 30 mm rounds and can fire up to 4,000 rounds per minute, with a range of 200 metres to 3 kilometres.
For anti submarine warfare, one Westland LynxThe Westland Lynx is a helicopter designed by Westland Aircraft and jointly produced with Aerospatiale, first flying on 21 March 1971 as the Westland WG. Originally intended as a utility craft for both civil and naval usage, military interest led to the d helicopter is carried, which is armed with 2 mark 46 torpedoes and carries dipping sonar as well as forward looking infrared (FLIR)systems.
The ship itself also has two twin torpedo launchers, which fire mark 46 torpedoes.
Radar is provided by a Thales SMART-S 3D radar for air and surface searches, a Thales LW-08 2D long range search radar, a Thales navigation radar, as well as two Thales STIR tracking and illuminating radars, which provide fire control for the main gun and Sea Sparrow missiles.
The ship carries a low frequency passive towed array sonar at the bow, as well as a medium frequency active search and attack mounted on the hull at the front of the ship.
For countermeasures, the ship carries a towed torpedo decoy to foil sonar detector, as well as chaff dispensing systems and radar detection and jamming systems.
