Mead's book satirized 1950s United States corporate business, in the guise of a "self-help" book.

The musical had a long run on Broadway (1,417 performances). The music and lyrics were written by Frank Loesser and book by Abe Burrows , Jack Weinstock , and Willie Gilbert .
