:For the item of clothing, see Pantyhose.A hose is a hollow tube designed to carry fluids from one location to another. Hoses are also sometimes called pipes (the word pipe usually refers to a rigid tube, whereas a hose is usually a flexible one). The shape of a hose is usually cylindrical (having a circular cross section).
Hoses are used in water or other liquid environments to convey air or other gases; they are used in air or other gaseous environments to convey liquids.
Specific applications include the following:
- A garden hose is used to water plants in a garden or lawn, or to convey water to a sprinkler for the same purpose.
- A fire hose is used by firefighterA firefighter sometimes called a fireman is a person who is trained and equipped to put out fires, rescue people and in some areas provide emergency medical services. The fire service also known as the fire brigade or fire department in some countries, iss to convey water to the site of a fireFor other uses see fire (disambiguation). bonfire The word fire is used to refer to the combination of the brilliant glow and large amount of heat released during a rapid, self-sustaining exothermic oxidation process of combustible gases ejected from a fu.
- Air hose s are used in underwater divingDiving has several meanings: plunging deliberately or acrobatically into water, swimming while underwater, and using breathing apparatus such as scuba diving equipment or surface supplied diving equipment. Humans are not the only ones to dive. Some specie (e.g., scuba divingSCUBA is an acronym for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus . These initials likely originated in the US Navy to refer to US commando frogman's rebreathers. As with radar, the acronym has become so familiar that capitalisation is often omitted.) to carry air from the surface or from air tank s. (See also SnorkelA snorkel is a tube about a 30 cm / 12 inches long, usually J-shaped, fitted with a reasonably comfortable mouthpiece, and constructed of rubber or plastic, used for remaining submerged while diving in shallow waters. Some snorkels have float-operated val.)
- In architectureArchitecture is the art and science of designing buildings. A wider definition would include within its scope the design of the total built environment, from the macrolevel of town planning, urban design, and landscape architecture to the microlevel of fu, metalFor alternative meanings see metal (disambiguation). In chemistry, a metal is an element that readily forms cations and has metallic bonds, and it is sometimes said that it is similar to a cation in a cloud of electrons. The metals are one of the three gr or plastic hoses (usually called pipes) are used to move water around a building; air duct s are used to move air around (see Air conditioning).
- Automotive hose s are used in automobiles to move fluids around for use in cooling or lubrication and in hydraulics.
- In chemistry and medicine, hoses (usually called tubes) are used to move liquid chemicals or gases around. (See also Laboratory.)
Hoses are typically used with clamps, spigots, and nozzles to control fluid flow.
