In the Warhammer 40,000 universe the Horus Heresy marked the end of the 'Great Crusade'.

During the heresy the forces of Chaos showed themselves in several of the space marine legions and corrupted them for their own needs. Included in these corrupted Chaos Space Marines was Horus, who until then had been considered the greatest warrior of humanity. The Chaos Space Marines changed direction from their outwards crusade and headed towards Terra (Earth} destroying many civilizations as they went. On Terra they met strong resistance from several loyal space marine legions and eventually were defeated when the Emperor himself killed Horus. After the failure of the Heresy the Chaos Space Marines retreated into the Eye of Terror
