Reggae singer Hortense Ellis was born on 18 April 1949 in Trenchtown, Kingston, Jamaica. She is Alton Ellis’ sister.

Hortense Ellis' career began with performances on the Vere Johns' Opportunity Knocks Talent Show, where she was a regular finalist.

In 1962 she cut several solos and duets with Alton for Coxsone Dodd. She recorded for Kenn Lack and Niney The Observer and released an album of duets with Jackie Edwards in 1978, and had a hit with Let It Be Me.

Also in 1978 she scored a Jamaican hit with the song Unexpected Places.

Ellis moved to New York City in 1985 but later returned to Jamaica.

Hortense Ellis died on Thursday 19 October 2000 at the Kingston Public Hospital from a stomach infection.
