Hopedale was first settled in 1660 and was officially incorporated in 1886.

The racial makeup of the town is 97.53% White, 0.56% Black or African American, 0.02% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 1.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
