Hong Kong International Airport is popularly referred to as Chek Lap Kok Airport (赤鱲角機場 Pinyin: Chėlič Jiǎo, Red Perch Cape), after Chek Lap Kok, one of the islands that make up the airport's 12.48 km˛ platform reclaimed from sea. HKIA was built on an artificial island built by reclamation, and is connected to the north side of Lantau Island at the new town of Tung Chung.
Chek Lap Kok is the replacement for the old Hong Kong International Airport, popularly known as Kai Tak International AirportHong Kong International Airport popularly known as Kai Tak International Airport ( Chinese Pinyin: Qde, WG: Ch'i-te, Enlighten & Virtuous) was the international airport of Hong Kong until July 6, 1998. Having the IATA airport code HKG as well as the ICAO, which had a spectacular urban approach, causing noise pollution for nearby residents. After complaints from residents and pilots flying to Hong Kong, Kai Tak was retired after operations were moved to Chek Lap Kok. Many aviation enthusiasts were upset with the demise of Kai Tak, because of the unique approach. Pilots had to use a checkerboard on a hill to safely land at Kai Tak. Chep Lap Kok's landing is an ordinary landing.
The airport is operated by the Airport Authority Hong Kong, a statutory body wholly owned by the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative RegionA Special Administrative Region SAR ( Simplified Chinese: ; Traditional Chinese: ; pinyin: te bie xing zheng qu) is a political subdivision of the People's Republic of China. The PRC at present has two SARs, Hong Kong and Macau, where each has a Chief Exe. It is the hub of Cathay PacificCathay Pacific Airways Limited ( Pinyin(in Mandarin Chinese):Guotai Hangkong Youxian Gongsi, abbreviated ) is an Asian commercial airline based in Hong Kong. Their hub is in Hong Kong International Airport, or "Chek Lap Kok International Airport". Kai Tak, the Hong Kong flag carrier. Its IATA Airport Code is HKG, which is the same as what Kai Tak once had.
