| Gleditsia triacanthos L. |
The Honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos) is a deciduous tree native to North America. It is mostly found in the moist soil of river valleys from southeastern South Dakota south to New Orleans and east to central Pennsylvania. It is also naturalized in parts of southern EuropeFor the band of the same name, see Europe (band . Europe is a continent forming the westermost part of the Eurasian supercontinent. Europe is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Se.
Honey locusts can reach a height of 20-30 meters (66-100 feet). They grow quickly, which make them useful plantings in areas where shade is wanted quickly, such as new parks or housing developments, and in disturbed and "reclaimed" environments, such as former surface mines. They are relatively short-lived, however, and prone to losing large branches in windstorms.
Honey locusts commonly have long, branching spines growing out of the twigs and branches. It has been suggested that they evolved to protect the trees from now-extinct large animals (witch may have been the distributor of its seeds, eating the pods whole and passing out the seeds intact.) Thornless forms (f. inermis) are occasionally found growing wild, and have been widely selected for horticultural use.
The leavesThis article is about the leaf a plant organ. See Leaf (disambiguation) for other meanings. In botany, a leaf is an above-ground plant organ specialized for photosynthesis. For this purpose, a leaf is typically flat and thin, to expose the chloroplast con are pinnately compound on older trees but bipinnate ly compound on vigorous young trees. The leaflets are 1.5-2.5cm long (smaller on bipinnate leaves) and bright green. They turn yellow in the fall. The strongly scented cream-colored flowerA flower is the reproductive organ of those plants classified as angiosperms ( flowering plants; Division Magnoliophyta). The function of a flower is to produce seeds through sexual reproduction''. For the higher plants, seeds are the next generation, ands appear in late spring, in clusters emerging from the base of the leaf axils.
The pulp on the insides of the podsThe term legume has two closely related meanings in botany, a situation encountered with many botanical common names of useful plants whereby an applied name can refer to either the plant itself, or to the edible fruit (or useful part). Thus, "legume" can is edible and sweet; however, it should not be confused with Black locustBlack locust Robinia pseudoacacia is a tree in the subfamily Faboideae of the pea family Fabaceae. It is native to eastern North America from northeast Texas to New York, and widely planted and naturalised elsewhere in the rest of temperate North America,, which is toxic. Interestingly Honey locust is not a significant honeyHoney is a sweet and viscous fluid produced by bees and other insects from the nectar of flowers. The flavor and color of the substance is largely determined by the type of the flowers from which the nectar is gathered. Common flavours of honey include or plant, while Black locust honey is prized.
This tree's thornless form and it cultivars are popular in cultivation, expecially in the northern plains of North America where few other trees can survive and prosper. This tree tolerates urban conditions, compacted soil, road salt, alkaline soil, heat and drought. This tree's populatrity is in part due to the fact that it transplants so easily. This tree is resistant to Gypsy mothThis article deals with the moth Lymantria dispar''. For the aircraft see De Havilland Gipsy Moth''. The gypsy moth Lymantria dispar is a moth of European origin. Life cycle Gypsy moth egg masses are laid on branches and trunks of trees, but egg masses mas but is defoliated by another pest, the Mimosa webworm . Spider mites, canker s, and galls are a problem with some trees.
The genus contains 12 other species, native to Asia and other areas of North America; see Gleditsia for details.
