Hibbing is the birthplace of famous baseball player and home run king Roger Maris. Music legend Bob Dylan was born in Duluth, Minnesota, but raised in nearby Hibbing.

The Greyhound Lines bus company was started in Hibbing, but the corporate headquarters has long since left the region. Even the company's buses no longer stop in the city, although the Greyhound Bus Museum remains.

1 Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 483.1 km² (186.5 mi²). 470.5 km² (181.7 mi²) of it is land and 12.5 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.60% water.

2 Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 17,071 people, 7,439 households, and 4,597 families residing in the city. The population density is 36.3/km² (94.0/mi²). There are 8,037 housing units at an average density of 17.1/km² (44.2/mi²). There are 7,439 households out of which 27.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% are married couplesMarriage is a relationship that plays a key role in the definition of many families. Precise definitions vary historically and between and within cultures, but it has been an important concept as a socially sanctioned bond between people who (usually) are living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% are non-families. 33.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.86.
