Hamas, acronym of Harakat al-Muqawamah al-Islamiyyah ( Arabic: Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas is also Arabic for 'zeal' or 'courage') is a Palestinian Islamist paramilitary and political organization, regarded by some as a militant organization and by others as a terrorist group.

The United States, Canada, Israel and the European Union consider Hamas a terrorist organization.

Hamas was founded by Shaikh Ahmed Yassin (later assassinated by the Israelis) and Mohammad Taha in late 1987, inspired by the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. Currently led by Khaled Mashaal, the movement is dedicated to fighting the Israeli occupation of Palestine, which, in Hamas' definition, includes all of Israel and the Israeli-occupied West BankThe West Bank is a territory in the Middle East constituting the area west of the Jordan River annexed by Jordan at the end of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. The Middle East is a subregion of Afr countries and throughout the Palestinian diaspora.

The movement's popularity stems from its paramilitary activities and its charitable operations; the provision of welfare and social services to the Palestinian poor. Hamas is notorious for using the tactic of suicide bombingA suicide bombing is a bomb attack on people or property, committed by a person who knows the explosion will cause his or her own death (see suicide). Historically the term has been used by Western media as far back as World War II in reference to the act against Israel, particularly against civilians in busy city areas.

Suicide attacks are an element of Hamas' asymmetric warfareAsymmetric warfare is a military term to describe warfare in which the two belligerents are mismatched in their military capabilities or accustomed methods of engagement such that the militarily diasadvantaged power must press its special advantages or ef against Israel. Israel has a modern army with tanks, planes and nuclear weapons, while the Palestinians do not. Suicide bombers therefore view themselves as the low technology equivalent of smart bombs, guided missiles and other high-technology weapons employed by Israel against the Palestinians. Because Hamas considers all Israelis to be active participants in an illegal occupation of Palestinian land and because Israel's policy of universal conscription implies that a majority of adults either serve in the Israeli military or reserves for some portion of their lives, Hamas does not distinguish between Israeli civilian and military targets. This lack of distinction between civilian and military targets has earned Hamas the label of "terrorist organization".

Hamas also fights a guerrilla war against the Israeli military and security forces in its effort to drive them from the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and ultimately to eliminate the state of Israel and replace it with an Islamic state.
