The deflection of the inner hair cell stereocillia opens mechanically gated ion channels that allows positively charged potassium ions to enter the cell. The influx of positive ions increases the receptor potential of the cell, which in turn, triggers the release of neurotransmitter at the basal end of the cell, via the opening of voltage gated calcium channels. The neurotransmitter diffuses across the synapsenerve cells to communicate with one another through axons and dendrites, converting electrical signals into chemical ones. For the technology festival, see Synapse Festival. Synapses are specialized junctions through which cells of the nervous system sign and binds to a receptorReceptor may refer to. In telecommunication, a receiver . In physiology, a sensory receptor is any structure which, on receiving environmental stimuli, produces an informative nerve impulse. In biochemistry, a receptor is a protein molecule that receives located on one of numerous auditory nerve fibers that contact each inner hair cell.
