Home > Habitat conservation

To conserve habitat for wild species and prevent their extinction or reduction in range is a priority of a great many groups that cannot be easily characterized in terms of any one ideology. See conservation for the view that includes energy and materials - this is only about wild species' habitat.

The conservation movement seeks to do this for a variety of reasons including the continuation of recreational hunting, fishing, hiking and birdwatching.

The ecology movement seeks to do this since it sees wild species as having the right to exist for their own sake. Since each species competes most intensely with its own kind, they argue, any cessation of competition between humans must be presaged by cessation of competition between humans and other species, and a recognition of their peaceful coexistence. This goal is shared by some elements of the peace movement and the green movement that is the intersection of them both.

The environmental movement shares some of these motivations, but focuses on human health concerns, wellness, and the environmental health impact of disputed ecosystemIn ecology, an ecosystem is a community of organisms (plant, animal and other living organisms also referred as biocenose) together with their environment (or biotope), functioning as a unit. The term ecosystem first appeared in a 1935 publication by thes that have fallen into poor ecological healthEcological health or ecological integrity or ecological damage is used to refer to symptoms of an ecosystem's pending loss of carrying capacity, ability to perform nature's services, or pending ecocide due to cumulative causes such as pollution. The term. It is the only movement to be concerned about nature's servicesNature's services is an umbrella term for the ways in which nature benefits humans, particularly those benefits that can be measured in economic terms. Robert Costanza and other theorists of natural capital conducted extensive economic analysis of nature' as rendered to humans from the natural capitalNatural capital refers to the mineral, plant, and animal formations of the Earth's biosphere when viewed as a means of production of oxygen, water filter, erosion preventer, or provider of other natural services. It is one approach to ecosystem valuation,.

Historically, there has been association between conservation movement and right-wing politicsIn politics, right-wing the political right or simply the right are terms which refer, with no particular precision, to the segment of the political spectrum in opposition to left-wing politics. It is usually, but not always, associated with conservatism., ecology and peace movement and green politicsGreen politics is a body of political ideas informed by environmentalism aimed at developing a sustainable society. It is considered by its advocates to be an alternative to both left and right views and parties, although adherents to both views tend to v, and environmental movement and left-wing politicsIn politics, left-wing political left leftism or simply the left are terms which refer (with no particular precision) to the segment of the political spectrum typically associated with any of several strains of socialism, social democracy, or liberalism (, but these lines are now quite blurred.

Over half of the EarthEarth also known as the Earth or Terra is the planet on which we live, the third planet outward from the Sun. It is the largest of the solar system's terrestrial planets, and the only planetary body that modern science confirms as harbouring life. The pla's land surface has been transformed due to human activity, resulting in drastic deforestation, erosion and loss of topsoil, extinction and such. Almost no terrestrial ecoregion, of 867 on Earth, has been spared from the onslaught of human consumption.

The arguments to conserve habitat are now found at every level from local religious figures to United Nations agencies. It is not really possible to ascribe any particular motivation to those who express this goal. It has become more common to ask who does not share this goal, and what use they seek to put converted habitat to.
