The first HMAS Fremantle (J-246/M-246) was a Bathurst class corvette built by Evans Deakin and Company at Brisbane in Queensland, launched on 18 March 1942 by Mrs. J. Curtin, wife of the Prime Minister John Curtin, and commissioned on 24 March 1943. HMAS Fremantle paid off to reserve on 22 June 1959 and was sold for scrap to the Kinoshita Company of Japan on 6 January 19611961 (As MAD Magazine pointed out on its first cover for the year) was the first "upside-down" year i. one that looked the same upside down since 1881, and the last until 6009. The S class destroyer HMS Swordsman , transferred to the Royal Australian Navy from the Royal Navy, was to have been renamed HMAS Fremantle but this was rescinded on 11 June 1920 and the original name retained.
