In 2003 the German armed forces, in search of a companion firearm for the HK MP7 submachine gun, asked Heckler und Koch to develop a suitable pistol. Using the same rare 4.6 x 30mm bottlenecked cartridge (see Internal ballistics) that the HK MP7 uses, HK developed the UCP.
Odd similarities exsist between the UCP and Fabrique Nationale's Five-seveN. Both use odd, low-caliber bottlenecked rounds fired at high velocities. Both also are developed to share ammuntion with and complement as sidearms submachine guns (the FN P90 in the case of the FN Five-seveN).
