Gondor is a fictional location from J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth.

1 History

Like Arnor to the north, Gondor is a human kingdom founded by the line of Elendil after the Downfall of Númenor. It was located to the south of Rohan and to the west of Mordor, on the Bay of Belfalas. Its name means "Land of Stone", from Sindarin gond (stone) + (n)dor (land), most likely given to it because of the Ered Nimrais and other mountain chains in the land.

1.1 Early History

Before the Downfall of Númenor, Gondor was home to many Númenórean colonists, who either mixed blood with the indigenous Middle Men if they were friendly, or dispersed them into Ras Morthil, Dunland, and Drúadan ForestTolkien's fictional universe of Middle-earth, Druadan Forest was a forest in northern Gondor. Druadan Forest lay in Anorien, and the great road which connected Gondor to Arnor ran through it. It was avoided by the people of Gondor and Rohan, who believed. Gondor, at a latitude comparable to VeniceVenice ( Italian Venezia German Venedig , the city of canals, is the capital of the region of Veneto, population 271,073 (2001). The city stretches across numerous small islands in a marshy lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. Pelargir was the chief city of the region of Lebennin, built where the river Sirith joined with the Great River. It was the primary port of Gondor. Gondor was part of the Last Alliance of Elves and MenThe Last Alliance of Elves and Men is an episode in J. Tolkien's fictional universe of Middle-earth. It was formed in 3430 of the Second Age (S. in respose to the threat of conquest by the Dark Lord Sauron. Sauron had been contending with the Elves for ma which overthrew Sauron for the first time.
