GoldenEye 007 is a first-person shooter for the Nintendo 64 based on the James BondFor the ornithologist see James Bond (ornithologist). The fictional character James Bond is a sophisticated British spy, invented by and appearing in books by Ian Fleming (and later Kingsley Amis, John Gardner, Raymond Benson and Charlie Higson). The ability to play as both good and bad characters in multiplayer contributed to this popularity.
The story of the movie was altered in several aspects to enhance the gameplay. The stolen helicopter was renamed the "Pirate", for example. In the game, Bond copied the GoldenEye key and left the original key on purpose — then planted a tracking bug on the helicopter so MI6 could find out where the helicopter was going. His first encounter with Natalya Fydorovna Simonova was not at the Statue Park, but in his second visit to the Severnaya Complex, where she was imprisoned; this scene is noted by the fact that if you stay near her long enough, she says, "Have you been here before? You seem to know your way around."
Following the success of GoldenEye 007, Rare developed Perfect Dark in 2000 for the N64. Perfect Dark has many similarities and candid references to GoldenEye 007 (e.g., if as Joanna Dark you hang around Carrington long enough, he says, "Don't, Joanna, it makes me nervous.") and was even marketed as a semi-sequel to it, although Perfect Dark has nothing to do with the James Bond license.
The Bond license was picked up by Electronic Arts, which created multiple games based upon other James Bond movies; however, their most recent James Bond games have had original scripts and have even had live actors playing the roles of many characters.
In the Fall of 2004 EA Games will release for Xbox, PlayStation 2 and GameCube video game consoles. This will be the first game where you will not take on the role of James Bond, but rather an aspiring 00 Agent recruited by Auric Goldfinger, the villain in the movie Goldfinger. GoldenEye, the movie, will actually have nothing to do with the game nor does GoldenEye: Rogue Agent have anything to do with the GoldenEye 007, the game.
