Home > Gnadenhutten massacre

The Gnadenhutten massacre took place on 8 March 1782 in Ohio. It was a massacre of Native Americans by white militiamen in retaliation for raids carried out by another Native American group. 29 men, 27 women, and 34 children were killed. The inhabitants of Gnadenhutten were Lenape members of the Moravian church, which had remained neutral during the American Revolutionary War on account of their pacifist religious convictions.
