Home > George Prevost
Sir George Prevost (1767-1816) was a British soldier and colonial administrator. He joined the military as a youth and became an British Army captain in 1784. Prevost served in the West Indies during the Napoleonic Wars serving as commander of St. Vincent from 1794 to 1796. He became lieutenant-governor of St. Lucia from 1798 to 1802 and governor of Dominica from 1802 to 1805. In 1808 he became lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia and in 1811 governor-in-chief of British North America and commander of British forces in North America. He was the commander of British forces during the War of 1812 but was recalled after failing to capture Plattsburgh, New YorkPlattsburgh, New York refers to two locations in Clinton County, New York: City of Plattsburgh Town of Plattsburgh. in 1814. He returned to England for an inquiry in 1815 but died before it could be held.See also List of Canadian Governors General
