He was born in the Lhari district of Nagchu , Tibet. Following the announcement by the Dalai Lama, Chinese authorities detained the head of the Panchen Lama Search Committee, Chadrel Rinpoche and replaced him with Sengchen Lobsang Gyaltsen , an opponent of Chosgyi Gyantsen , the tenth Panchen Lama. Chadrel Rinpoche was accused of colluding with the Dalai Lama. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was replaced with with Gyancain Norbu after a conference on the 10th and 11th of November 1995.
