Gankutsuou, meaning the "King of Caves", is the Japanese name given for Alexandre Dumas's novel The Count of Monte Cristo.

An anime TV series based on the novel is produced by Studio Gonzo, reknowned for their work on Blue Submarine No. 6 , Hellsing and Last Exile. What set it aside from other adaptations is that it was setted in the future, with the story begins at the middle of the novel when the Count first appeared in the aristrocrat's society. Additionally, the protagonist is no longer the Count himself but rather Albert de Morcerf.
