Once a farm girl, forced to be betrothed to a farmer, she decided to find herself a new life with the Warrior Princess, Xena. Helping her in convincing the villagers of Amphipolis to defend themselves against the warlord, Draco, she became the best friend of Xena.
Gabrielle learned to defend herself using her trusty staff. She later learns how to fight with a sword and sais.
She has been known to be in love. One, with Hercules' partner, Iolaus, second with her childhood friend, Perdicas, whom she married and was later killed by Callisto. And last, as being with her best friend for six years, she has grown a strong bond of love and friendship with Xena. A source of humor (see subtext) was the implication - but never outright affirmation - among fans, and later characters within the show, suggesting the two were 'too' close and probably lovers.
When helping to defend Britannia against Julius Caesar, she came in contact with an evil cult that had her to kill one of its priestess, Meridian. Using her, the dark god, Dahak, had managed to impregnate her, as Xena was able to save her. For two weeks, the child inside Gabrielle grew, and eventually was born a girl. Gabrielle named her Hope. Fearing that the child will become a danger to the world, Xena wanted to kill her, but Gabrielle saved her by putting her in a basket.
A year later, Gabrielle finds Hope, grown as a nine year old, and already spreading evil. Xena discovered that Hope is alive. Hope killed Xena's only son, Solan, and Gabrielle had poisoned her to death. Gabrielle had punished herself for killing Solan and for betraying her, for the second time, the first was when Gabrielle stopped her from killing Ming Tien , a mad tyrant.
When meeting with Hope, again, she sacrificed herself to save Xena as she and Hope had plummeted into a lava pit. Luckily, both of them had survived, somehow by an unknown force.
Gabrielle has long tried to perfect her soul as she followed the Way of Love, but in the end she followed the Way of Friendship.
