Online gaming is a phenomenon which has existed since shortly after the creation of the internet. Unfortunately, most of such gaming systems are not free to use for everybody, technically or financially. The GGZ project tries to overcome this barrier by developing a Free Software system, which is fully internationalized, supports game spectators, computer players and so on.
A lot of games have been developed already. Among them are ancient games like Chess just like computer-age games like Bomberman. Many games are implemented for different toolkits and desktops such as KDE, GNOME or SDL.
The complete list is as follows:
Independent game projects have started to include GGZ support:
Grubby is the chat bot developed by the GGZ project. It is a versatile internatioanalized bot.
The main server is named ggzd. Server tools are ggzduedit to edit user permissions and ggz-cmd to send commands and check the server uptime.
Game tournaments can be organized by anyone. Players can stay informed with the Competition Calendar application.
To enter a game room, the classic way of using a Core Client can be chosen. Alternatively, login is possible with a special application named GGZap, as well as from chat clients such as Gaim.
A rankings page exists where players can log in, watch their score and past results, as well as their collection of awards.
There are several projects not related to GGZ, but with (at least partially) similar goals.
