The General Electric Company plc (GEC) was a British company. It was renamed Marconi plc on November 30, 1999 after demerging its Marconi Electronic Systems.GEC is not to be confused with the American conglomerate General Electric (GE).
1 History
- 1886 - Founded as The General Electric Apparatus Company.
- 1889 - Renamed The General Electric Co. Ltd.
- 1967 - Acquires Associated Electrical Industries.
- 1968 - The General Electric Company plc merges with English Electric.
- 1989 - Power engineering interests separated off into the joint-venture company GEC Alsthom , which in 1998 becomes independent as Alstom.
- 1995 - Acquires Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering LtdVickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd (VSEL), based at Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. Now BAE Systems Marine Ltd, VSEL was acquired during the merger of British Aerospace and GEC's defence business. 1977's Aircraft and Shipbuilding Industries Act saw Vick.
- 1999 - Acquires KvaernerKvaerner is a Norway-based engineering and construction services company. Major subsidiaries are Aker Kvaerner and Aker Yards. Kvaerner was founded in Oslo in 1853 and listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange in 1967. By the 1990s, Kvaerner assembled a collectio's GovanGovan is a suburb of the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated on the south bank of the River Clyde, just across from Partick. It was an administratively independent Police Burgh from 1864 until it was swallowed up by an ever expanding city of Glasgow shipyard.
- 1999 - Acquires US Telecom network products manufacturer RELTEC , and Internet switching gear maker FORE Systems .
- 1999 - After a period of restructuring, during which the Marconi defence business is sold to British AerospaceBritish Aerospace (BAe) was a British aircraft manufacturer, now part of BAE SYSTEMS. The company was formed on April 29, 1977 from British Aircraft Corporation, Hawker Siddeley Aviation, Hawker Siddeley Dynamics and Scottish Aviation. In 1979, joined Air, GEC renames itself Marconi Plc.
