Frederick Catherwood ( February 27, 1799 - September 20, 1854) was an English artist and architect, best remembered for his explorations of ruins of the Maya civilization.

Catherwood made visits to Greece, Turkey, Egypt, and Palestine and made drawings and watercolors of the ancient remains there.

In 1836 he met travel writer John Lloyd Stephens in London. They read the account of the ruins of CopánThe Pre-Columbian city of Copan is a locale in extreme western Honduras, in the Copan Department, near to the Guatemalan border. It is the site of a major Maya kingdom of the Classic era. The kingdom, anciently named Xukpi (Corner-Bundle), fluorished from published by Juan GalindoJuan Galindo ( 1802- 1839) was a Central American explorer and army officer. Galindo's father was a government official in Costa Rica. He was of Spanish, English and Irish descent, but the curious rumor that Juan Galindo was actually born in Ireland as "J, and decided to try to visit Central AmericaCentral America is the region of North America located between the southern border of Mexico and the northwest border of Colombia, in South America. Some geographers classify Central America as a large isthmus, and in this geographic sense it sometimes in themselves and produce a more detailed and better illustrated account. February 24 William Ot and continued through the following year, visiting and doccumenting dozens of ruins, many for the first time.

Stephens and Catherwood returned to Yucatan to make further explorations, resulting in Incidents of Travel in Yucatan in 1843.

The following year Catherwood published Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America, with color lithographs from watercolors he made at various ruins.


Main temple at TulumTulum (sometimes rendered as Tuluum is a Pre-Columbian walled city of the Maya civilization located on the Caribbean Sea coast of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It may have been formerly also known by the name Zama . While an inscription dated 564 has, by Catherwood, from "Views of Ancient Monuments"

A large number of his original drawings and paintings were destroyed when the building where he was exibiting them in New York City caught fire, but a number survive in museums and private collections, often showing more detail than the published engravings.

With the California Gold Rush Catherwood moved to San Francisco, California to open up a store to supply miners and prospecters, which he considered a more likely way to make money than chasing after the gold himself.

Frederick Catherwood died in a ship wreck.
