Fort-de-France is the capital of France's Caribbean département d'outre-mer of Martinique. With a population of approximately 101,000 it is also one of the major cities in the Caribbean.

1 History

Originally named Fort-Royal, the city became economically important after the volcanic eruption of Mount Pelée destroyed the town of Saint-Pierre in 1902.

2 Sights

The city has a fine, natural harbor defended by three forts:

A statue commemorating Martinique-born Empress JosephineJosephine de Beauharnais ( June 23, 1763 May 29, 1814) was the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, and became Empress of France. She was born Marie Josephe Rose Tascher de la Pagerie in Les Trois-Ilets, Martinique on a slave plantation, the daughter of Jose, the wife of Napoleon, is in the city.
