The 2002 Football World Cup was held in South Korea and Japan from May 31 to June 30. It was the 17th edition of the tournament. For the first time in history it was organised by two countries, and also for the first time it was not held in Europe or the Americas. The tournament was dedicated to the children of the world. The tournament was won by Brazil for a record fifth time.
The format of the competiton stayed the same as in 1998: 32 teams were split into eight groups of four. 16 teams: eight group winners and eight second place finishers would qualify for the knockout competition.
The tournament featured the unexpected early elimination of many of the best regarded teams, with France and Argentina not surviving the first round and Italy and SpainThe Spain national football team is controlled by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (Real Federacion Espanola de Futbol). They won the second European Championship ever held in 1964. Spain has greatly underachived in the World Cup, never advancing bey defeated by the Republic of KoreaKorea, in ancient times, had a ball game called 'chuk-guk' very similar in form to contemporary football. However, Koreans first saw the present version of football in 1882 when British crew members played a game while their vessel was visiting the lnchon. Three teams reached the quarterfinals for the first time: TurkeyThe Turkey national football team is the national football team of Turkey and is controlled by the Turkish Football Association. Their highest achievement was getting to the semi-finals of the World Cup of Japan and South Korea in 2002. Turkey is located, SenegalThe Senegal national football team nicknamed the Lions of Teranga is the national team of Senegal and is controlled by the Federation Senegalaise de Football. It made its first World Cup in 2002 and made quite a splash, defeating world and european champi and Korea, with Turkey and Korea reaching the semifinals. In the end, though, the finals saw the all-time World Cup winning country, Brazil, defeat the team with the second-best World Cup record, GermanyThe German national football team is one of the most successful national football teams. They have appeared in seven World Cup finals, winning three. They have appeared in 5 European Championship finals, winning three. During the existence of the German D, 2-0 for their record fifth title. Amazingly, the 2002 final was the first time Brazil and Germany had ever faced one another at a World Cup. Ronaldo won the Golden Boot by scoring eight goals.
