The Charter Township of Flint is a charter township in Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 33,691. The City of Flint is adjacent to the township on the east, but is politically independent.

1 Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 61.2 km² (23.6 mi²). 61.2 km² (23.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

2 Demographics

As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 33,691 people, 13,972 households, and 9,025 families residing in the township. The population density is 550.5/km² (1,425.5/mi²). There are 14,864 housing units at an average density of 242.9/km² (628.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 77.77% White, 16.12% African American, 0.61% Native American, 2.20% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other racesThe United States Census Bureau uses the federal government's definitions of race when performing a census. There are 13,972 households out of which 30.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% are married couplesMarriage is a relationship that plays a key role in the definition of many families. Precise definitions vary historically and between and within cultures, but it has been an important concept as a socially sanctioned bond between people who (usually) are living together, 14.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.4% are non-families. 30.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the township the population is spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 87.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.2 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $39,718, and the median income for a family is $48,763. Males have a median income of $41,449 versus $26,933 for females.
