Flinders University is located in Adelaide, South Australia and was established in 1966. It is somewhat unique as the Flinders Medical Centre was built on land adjacent to the campus and the university's Medical School was based within this new public hospital. The other two universities in South Australia are the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia.

The establishment of the Centre for Neuroscience has helped to increase the prestige of Flinders as an institution as well as provide a unified body for neuroscientific research.

Flinders University is a member of Innovative Research Universities Australia (IRU Australia).
